The design[]
- Inverted Pentagram:
- This is the foundational shape of the sigil. Unlike an upright pentagram, which often symbolizes spirituality dominating the material, the inverted pentagram represents the material world's dominance over the spiritual.
- This inversion signifies a focus on earthly desires and physical existence.
- Goat's Head:
- At the center of the pentagram is the head of a goat, representing Baphomet. This depiction, heavily influenced by Éliphas Lévi's work, features:
- Horns: Symbolizing power and strength.
- A combination of human and animal features: Representing the duality of nature.
- Often, the goat will have a place for the torch on its head, which represents balance.
- At the center of the pentagram is the head of a goat, representing Baphomet. This depiction, heavily influenced by Éliphas Lévi's work, features:
- Additional Symbolic Elements:
- In some versions, particularly those influenced by earlier occultist designs, Hebrew letters may be placed at the pentagram's points. These letters often spell out "Leviathan.
Modern Formulation:[]
- The modern Sigil of Baphomet, the inverted pentagram with a goat's (Baphomet's) head, was largely popularized by Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan, which he founded in 1966.
- The church adopted the sigil as its official symbol.
- It prominently featured on the cover of "The Satanic Bible" in 1969.
- Prior to LaVey's church, the symbol was less widespread in it's current form. Occultist Stanislas de Guaita, in his 1897 book "La Clef de la Magie Noire" displayed an inverted pentagram containing hebrew letters. This is a very early recognizable version of elements of the current sigil.
- Essentially, while the components of the symbol have older roots, the specific combination and its widespread recognition are tied to the Church of Satan.
In Popular Culture:[]
- Due to the Church of Satan's high profile, the Sigil of Baphomet has made appearances in various forms of media. Its presence often signifies themes of Satanism, occultism, or rebellion.
- It is seen in many films, and television shows, that deal with those themes, ofthen in horror movies. Due to the nature of the symbol, it is often found in darker themed media.
- It is also present in many forms of modern art, and music. Especially in the heavy metal music genre.
